Herrick Discussion

I wanted to see what everybody out there thinks of Robert Herrick. I feel as if, since he wrote at the very end of the Renaissance, he lacked the poetic identity of the time. Although stylistically unique, I found his works to be sexually perverted and childish. Many poets include sexual references in their works, but Herrick's seems to make it too obvious. Granted, many of his more concise works posses some literary value, but he utilizes metaphors which were even exhausted around his time. The most amusing thing about his poetry, to me at least, is that he was a clergyman who spoke more perversely than any other poet of his era. I honestly feel very sorry for his altar boys!

Hey People!

I figured I would give all you readers an introduction to my blog. Welcome all!!! I am very excited about this blog because I will be posting alot of new poetry, creative pieces, short stories, and crtical essays by myself. However, I am equally excited to introduce some of you guys to the critics, poets, and authors who have inspired me. I will be discussing famous works by the likes of John Donne, Robert Herrick, Shakespeare, Marlowe, William Carlos Williams, Robert Pinsky, W.B. Yeats, and more. The discussion is open to everyone (please do not be afraid to write what you think about a work), but I would like, most of all, to introduce you to my writing. ENJOY!!!

La Salsa Boricua

La Salsa Boricua

Willie Colon, Hector Lavoe, they play
for us, for our people. Una salsa
tan rica with the consistency de
mi sangre. El Todopoderoso
starts at the eardrum and proceeds
to overcome mi cuerpo eterno.
It exudes from my pores and reminds me
of a place where las palmitas dance to
the rhythm of the bongo and the brass.
I hear Frankie in the distance singing
over the noise of smacking dominos.
I smell my Tia’s arroz con pollo
topped off with some of her special salsa.
Boricua. It is more than just a race.
